The story of a global flood, one that covered even the highest mountains and required a massive wooden ark, has fascinated people for centuries. But what does the geological and historical record actually show? Let’s break down the main issues.
How Much Water Would It Take?
To cover Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth at 8,848 meters (29,029 feet), the planet would need an additional 3 billion cubic kilometers of water—more than twice the volume of all water currently on Earth (USGS, 2023). In percentage terms, Earth’s oceans, ice caps, groundwater, and atmosphere combined hold about 1.4 billion cubic kilometers of water. Covering Everest would require over 200% more water than actually exists on the planet. There is no known source for this extra water, nor any mechanism for its sudden appearance or disappearance (USGS, 2023).
Could the Ark Survive?
The ark, as described in Genesis, would have been about 137 meters long, 23 meters wide, and 14 meters high, built from wood. Modern engineering studies show that wooden ships much smaller than this suffer from structural failure in rough seas due to flexing and leaking (Hong et al., 2014). The stresses of a year-long global flood, with turbulent currents and massive debris, would almost certainly destroy a wooden vessel of that size and weight, especially when loaded with thousands of animals and provisions.
What Would a Global Flood Look Like Geologically?
A flood covering the entire planet would leave unmistakable evidence: a single, uniform sediment layer spanning all continents, containing a chaotic mix of fossils from every habitat and era. Instead, the geological record shows distinct, ordered layers of rock, limestone, sandstone, siltstone, shale, each formed in specific environments over millions of years (Prothero, 2007). Fossils are found in a consistent sequence, with marine life in older rocks, followed by amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and finally humans, never all jumbled together as a global flood would predict.
What Do We Actually See?
We do see evidence of large floods, but they are regional, not global. The Missoula Floods at the end of the last Ice Age carved out the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington, leaving behind giant ripple marks, erratic boulders, and thick layers of silt and gravel (Bretz, 1923; Baker, 2009). These deposits are local, not worldwide, and are always found above and below undisturbed layers of rock and fossil beds that show no sign of catastrophic mixing.
The Historical Record
Flood myths are common in many cultures, but they reflect local disasters, river floods, tsunamis, or storm surges, interpreted through the lens of oral tradition. Ancient Middle Easterners would have experienced catastrophic local floods but had no way to distinguish a regional event from a global one. There is no historical or archaeological evidence for a single flood that wiped out all life or reset human civilization.
Conclusion
The idea of a global flood is not supported by geology, engineering, or history. The amount of water required is physically impossible, the ark as described could not survive the conditions, and the geological record shows a complex, ordered history of Earth—not the chaos a worldwide flood would leave behind. What we do see are local floods, layered rocks, and a fossil record that tells the story of life evolving over billions of years.
